Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How does the Ecoegg laundry egg work?

The Ecoegg laundry egg contains a number of small pellets and it is these pellets that are the secret to the Ecoegg laundry egg’s cleaning power.

The Ecoegg laundry egg contains two types of cleaning pellets:

The tourmaline ceramic pellets weaken the adhesive forces between the dirt and fabric.

The mineral pellets then naturally ionize the oxygen molecules in the water which then penetrate deep into the fabric lifting away the dirt and grime, without fading colours or damaging the fibres.

Our own scientific testing shows that these two types of pellets used together give the optimum cleaning results.

The ionized oxygen molecules also increase the pH level of the water, which has a natural softening effect on your laundry, so you do not need to use additional fabric softener or conditioner.

Do you need to use fabric softener with the Laundry Egg?

None of the products in our range contain any harsh chemicals or ammonia that normal detergents often contain.

The cleaning pellets are non-toxic and do not contain any harsh chemicals, petrochemicals, enzymes, optical brighteners or phosphates. Contains: >30% Anionic surfactants, 15-30% non-ionic surfactants.
The fragrance free option contains no perfume which can irritate sensitive skin. But if you opt for the fragrance option, the pellets are gently fragranced with natural essential oils, leaving your clothes smelling gorgeous while still being great for sensitive skin.

The Laundry Egg is a hypoallergenic product and does not contain any fragrance, as fragrance is a known irritant to the skin. Your washing is left with a ‘fresh but not fragrant’ smell. If you wish, you can add some fabric softener/conditioner to give your washing a fragrant smell and this will not affect the operation of the Laundry Egg.

We would recommend an eco-friendly fabric softener/conditioner where possible. Alternatively, some people find that essential oil works great to give your laundry a fresh fragrance. Just put a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil into the drawer of your washing machine before each wash. The Laundry Egg will naturally soften fibres as it changes the pH of the water so softener is not a necessity if you suffer from sensitive skin.

Can the Ecoegg laundry egg be used for hand washing?

None of the products in our range contain any harsh chemicals or ammonia that normal detergents often contain.

Yes. Just pre-soak the ecoegg laundry egg in the water for approximately 20 minutes and then hand wash as normal, allowing water to flow through the ecoegg laundry egg.

What are the pellets made from in the egg?

There are two types of Pellets in the egg, which are the white coloured mineral pellets and the dark tourmaline pellets. Tourmaline is a naturally occurring element, part of the silicate group. It occurs in many forms throughout nature and has a multitude of beneficial properties which can be applied to many different applications. In this case, we are looking at its ability to assist the laundry process.

We acknowledge that using tourmaline alone would not give satisfactory cleaning results. However, the combined effect with the mineral pellets does prove more effective than with the mineral pellets alone. The tourmaline pellets weaken the adhesive forces between the dirt and fabric. The mineral pellets natural ionize the oxygen molecules in the water which then penetrate deep into the fabric, lifting away the dirt and the grime, without fading colours or damaging fibres. Our own scientific testing shows that these two types of pellets used together give the optimum cleaning results.

Please note that the ionized oxygen molecules also increase the pH level of the water, which has a natural softening effect on your laundry, so you do not need to use additional fabric softener or conditioner.

What type of essential oils does the laundry egg contain?

Since all our products are hypoallergenic and made for sensitive skin, none of them contain any perfume, but they contain a small percentage of essential oil that adds the fragrance.

Our spring blossom fragrance is made from Juniper essential oil, which is made from berries and the needles of the juniper plant. Our Fresh linen scent of the Ecoegg range is made from Patchouli Essential oil which is made from iris flowers. This smells just like fresh bed linen/Fresh bedding

Will the Laundry Egg harm washing machines?

No, the Laundry Egg is perfectly safe to use with all makes of washing machine. It is made from soft durable rubber, so it is gentle on your machine.

Can the Ecoegg Laundry egg be used on Polyester clothing?

The pellets themselves are perfect for all fabrics including delicate items, however, we would only advise that delicate items are placed in a net laundry bag to protect them.

If they are very delicate, or an expensive item, we would recommend hand washing, by soaking the Ecoegg in some hand hot water for about 20 mins, then agitate and remove the Ecoegg, adjusting the temperature of the water to suit.

Why isn’t my Ecoegg laundry egg working as well as I expected?

There are some steps you can take to make sure you are getting the best from the Ecoegg laundry egg:

Make sure you are not overloading your machine.  The Ecoegg laundry egg needs room to move around in the wash

Make sure that your washing machine is not set to use the minimum amount of water.Whilst the Ecoegg laundry egg works well on most everyday stains, just like with normal washing detergent, there may be the occasional stain that requires extra help.   A ‘pre-wash’ or ‘in wash’ stain remover can be used as normal.  This will not affect the performance of the ecoegg laundry egg in any way.

The Ecoegg laundry egg contains no harsh bleaching agents.  If you find that your whites are not coming out  as bright as you are used to, try adding some eco-friendly laundry bleach to your white loads.

It is important to remember that the Ecoegg laundry egg does not contain any harsh chemicals and therefore cannot be compared to the clean of conventional biological washing detergents that can contain toxic chemicals and bleaching agents.

The Ecoegg laundry egg is a much more natural alternative which is kinder to the environment, your skin and your pocket. Also, it is important to remember the amount of money you will be saving by using the Ecoegg laundry egg.  For every day worn once and minor stained clothes, using a concoction of toxic chemicals is an unnecessary waste of money.  The Ecoegg laundry egg
can save you a great deal of money.

Are they natural fragrances in Laundry Egg?

Yes, they are natural fragrances, they are non irritant and non allergen, so absolutely fine for people with sensitive skin. Allergy UK have tried and tested the fragrances and very happy to also endorse the fragranced Laundry Eggs.

Are our Laundry eggs tested on animals?

None of our products or their components are tested on animals.

Why is there no smell on my washing from the fragrance?

Our Ecoeggs were developed for people with sensitive skin and to be kind to the environment Therefore, it is only a hint of essential oil fragrance that they smell as they are natural fragrances, they are non irritant and non allergen.  Allergy UK have tried and tested the fragrances, and are very happy to also endorse the fragranced Laundry Eggs.

If you are used to a strong fragrance, then it is fine to use a little fabric conditioner, or alternatively essential oil in the fabric conditioner compartment.

Laundry not smelling clean – removing deodorant etc.

To remove the strong fragrance from deodorants, you may need to use some of our stain remover, or a higher temperature, if the fabric will allow.

Alternatively a pre-soak, or you can include an in-wash stain remover.
There is only a "hint" of fragrance, in our fragranced laundry eggs, as they are natural fragrances, are non irritant and non allergen.

This is in order for Allergy UK, who have tried and tested them, to be happy to also endorse the fragranced Laundry Eggs.

Can you leave the Laundry egg in the machine during the rinse cycle?

The Ecoegg is a completely different concept to using washing detergents which all contain soap.As the Ecoegg does not contain any ‘soap’ agents, it leaves almost no residue on your clothes.  Therefore, the rinse cycle can be significantly reduced, saving water, time and electricity.  Some machines have a’ rinse button,’ which, when pressed, skips the rinse cycle.  If you are unable to cut out the rinse cycle, this will not affect the Ecoegg.
